Stakeholders tip media practitioners on effective child’s rights reporting

Media practitioners in the Northern region, have been urged to take a proactive role in reporting issues to do with child abuse if Malawi is to accelerate her gains made to end the vice.

District Social Welfare Officer for Mzimba North, Edward Chisanga made the appeal on Wednesday in Mzuzu during a workshop on Child laws, Case management and Reporting on children-related issues, which drew participants from various media houses and other stakeholder.

According to Chisanga, despite concerted efforts aimed at addressing the various abuses facing children, it is worrisome that such abuses remain on the increase in Mzuzu City, hence, the need to engage the media:

On his part, child protection officer for Plan Malawi international, Silence Banda, attributed the rise in child abuse to cultural practices.

Banda, however, said it was pleasing to note that a lot of communities are able to report all forms of child abuses to relevant authorities.
